This fee includes lunch every day during the conference and one ticket for the conference dinner. A conference dinner to be held on Thursday, June 1, will be included in the registration fee. We have set aside a block of rooms on the Colorado State University campus for those who would prefer that option.

Feb 15, The ICNFT community includes researchers from medicine, psychology, physics, mathematics and engineering. The International Conferences on Neural Field Theory at the University of Reading contribute to the further development and shaping of this community by bringing together well-known and young researchers. Ideas from the different fields meet here in a truly interdisciplinary and inspiring environment. An inverse problem denotes the task of computing an unknown physical quantity from indirect measurements.
The corresponding forward problem maps the physical quantity to the measurements. Inverse problems appear in many practical applications in biology, medicine, weather forecasting, chemistry, engineering, physics, to name but a few, and their analysis and solution presents considerable challenges in mathematics and statistics. This conference will bring together mathematicians and statisticians, working on theoretical and numerical aspects of inverse problems, and engineers, physicists and other scientists, working on challenging inverse problem applications.
We welcome industrial representatives, doctoral students, early career and established academics working in this field to attend. Papers will be accepted for the conference based on a word abstract for oral or poster presentation. Scientists have previously designed materials with internal structures that interfere with the propagation of sound and light, and now researchers are working on making bigger versions of these structures, which could be used to control the propagation of earthquakes. Observations of the vertical wind profiles by the ESA ADM-Aeolus mission have been demonstrated to have the potential of providing a significant improvement in NWP, primarily in the tropics where the lack of wind information is most critical for the global NWP. The same dynamical and data issues that apply to the tropics are shared by mesoscale NWP models.
The workshop aims to discuss some open issues in mesoscale data assimilation for NWP. It aims to strengthen the interaction and, most importantly, to nurture collaborations between two groups of scientists. May 5, This workshop is intended to facilitate the more rapid advance of development of coupled data assimilation methodologies to improve weather and climate predictions and reanalyses. The workshop will cover methods for coupling of data assimilation methodologies between the atmosphere, ocean, land-surface, sea-ice, aerosols, atmospheric chemistry, and more, including weak coupling coupling of the forecasts providing the background forecasts and strong coupling coupling of the state estimation as well.
The workshop will also consider which observations are particularly important to advance coupled assimilations.
The workshop will include overview presentations by selected invited speakers, minute oral presentations, posters, discussion of the key scientific and technical challenges, and breakout groups to list the key issues and to formulate recommendations for how collaboration facilitated by the WMO can advance the state of the science more rapidly. This is a COST project, which started in May with the main objective to connect the community of scientists in Europe, who concentrate their research on the synergy of Meteorology, Geodesy, GNSS and related to those fields topics.
The research area of this project project is spatial and temporal variability of water vapour in the atmosphere and its impact on severe atmospheric events, the climate system in general, as well as on the accuracy of the GNSS positioning products.

April 18, Data assimilation for extreme ionospheric events: observing system experiments of the September 26, geomagnetic storm. Abstract: As increasingly sophisticated ground- and space-based technological systems that depend on the near-Earth space environment are being built, vulnerabilities to variations in the ionosphere are also increasing. These vulnerabilities are especially prominent during extreme space-weather events, where satellite communication systems or terrestrial power grid are at risk of being disrupted.
Data assimilation has become an essential tool for the specification of ionospheric space-weather, in particular the evolution of its electron density distribution. Synthetic observations are generated and are assimilated into the ensemble forecast at every hour, using observations available within 30 minutes of analysis time.
As a system that is strongly driven by external influences, the quality ionospheric forecasts depends on the estimation of these drivers, which include solar conditions, geomagnetic activity, and the state of the charge-neutral thermosphere, which is intimately coupled with the ionosphere.
Thus the data assimilation system employed is extended to estimate these drivers in addition to the electron density state. Results show that the LETKF can adequately handle the inverse problem of using the available observations to estimate the ionospheric drivers that generated them, in addition to estimating the global distribution of electron density during this extreme space-weather event.
The first half of the course focuses on theoretical aspects: uncertainties definition, Monte Carlo methods, projection methods, approximation methods and calibration data methods.
